Before you buy: Masonic Rings

Which ring are you entitled to wear?

Any Master Mason may wear the square and compasses. Everything else on this page marks an office, a degree or a membership: the Past Master jewel, the Scottish Rite’s 14° ring, the double-headed eagle and the 33°, the Templar cross and crown, and the Shrine’s scimitar and crescent. None of them ranks above the Master Mason degree, and none of them is a gift for someone who does not hold it.

Points in or points out

There is no universal rule. Some Brethren wear the points toward themselves, some outward, and some Lodges have a custom of turning them on becoming a Past Master. Ask in your own Lodge; the ring guide covers the arguments.

What to check on a listing

The metal, stated plainly: “gold tone” is not gold, and “silver tone” is not silver. Whether it can be resized: tungsten cannot, and many stainless bands are difficult. A band width in millimetres, because heavy signets photograph smaller than they wear. And an exchange policy, because a first ring bought online is very often the wrong size. Go up half a size for a wide band and measure at the end of the day.

Frequently asked questions

Can a non-Mason wear a Masonic ring?

It is not illegal, but it signals membership the wearer does not have, and Masons notice. The square and compasses ring is for Master Masons; the Past Master, Scottish Rite, Templar and Shrine rings are for members of those offices and bodies.

Is a 32° ring a higher rank than a Master Mason ring?

No. The Master Mason degree is the highest degree in Freemasonry. The 32° is a Scottish Rite degree, appendant to the Craft, and the ring shows Scottish Rite membership, not seniority. See York Rite vs Scottish Rite.

Should I buy a Masonic ring as a gift?

Only after he has been raised, and only from a listing with a clear exchange policy, since sizing is usually wrong the first time. Cufflinks or a lapel pin carry the same emblem without the sizing risk.
